Devilishly delicious lowfat popcorn

Let’s see, a handful of healthy potato soy crisps or a mountain of indulgent caramel covered butter popcorn? Both contain carbs, which are proven to increase mood-boosting serotonin, which dips on premenstrual days. But one is mind-blowingly bland and the other promises to blow your diet right out of the water. No PMSing gal should be forced to make such difficult decisions.

Now you don’t have to choose thanks to the evil geniuses at LesserEvil Snack Co. in Tuckahoe, NY, who have created a line of tasty gourmet popcorn that's low in fat and contains no trans fats or white sugar.

The two founders are a former marketing exec from Ben & Jerry’s and a communications exec from Snapple, who defected to take their indulgent treat know-how and create delicious, healthier snacks. Their line of air-popped gourmet popcorn, which is cooked in traditional copper kettles, makes it easy to indulge those PMS cravings with all their mood-boosting carbs while avoiding the guilt that comes with a truckload of sugar and fat. Flavors include:

KettleCorn, which has a rich salty buttery taste with a crisp lightly sweet coating

Black&White, a mix of chocolate and vanilla

SinNamon, which is reminiscent of cinammon toast

PeanutButter&Choco, a Reese’s peanut butter cup lover's dream

Maple Pecan, which has a rich maple flavor and pecan bits and is infused with heart-protective plant sterols that are proven to lower LDL “bad” cholesterol

The skinny on the health part: This all-natural air-popped popcorn contains 120 calories or less and one to two grams of fiber per serving. Plus, it boasts no preservatives or trans fat, is low in saturated fat (1.5 grams or less per serving), and contains no sugar, corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup (it’s sweetened with evaporated cane juice and brown rice syrup).

The skinny on the tasty part: It contains real clarified butter, cocoa, peanut butter, cinnamon, maple and pecans. No artificial flavors here.

While it’s not exactly health food—unless butter suddenly becomes classified as a vegetable (fingers crossed!)—without a bucket of gooey sugar like you get in other sweet popcorn treats, you'll avoid the inevitable crash as well as the guilt.

Did you know?

Most popcorn produces two basic shapes when it's popped: snowflake or mushroom. Snowflake is primarily used in movie theaters and ballparks because it looks and pops bigger. Mushroom is usually used for candy because it's less likely to crumble.

This month, three lucky Four Weeks subscribers will win one of three LesserEvil popcorn gifts: a four-pack of LesserEvil popcorn or Cocoa Coal, which is their new flavor for the holidays.
